Cover: Illustration shows the elephant-nose fish (Gnathonemus petersii). Cerebellar Purkinje cells of these mormyrid fish have a unique dendritic tree architecture, which differs from the dendrite structure known from mammalian Purkinje cells. Background image shows a mormyrid Purkinje cell with its characteristic palisade pattern and low degree of branching (IP3 receptor subtype I antibody staining). Mormyrid Purkinje cells also differ in their electrophysiological response characteristics from their mammalian counterparts: climbing fiber activation does not result in a complex spike but in a large excitatory postsynaptic potential, which is sometimes followed by low-amplitude sodium spikes (white trace). This study provides an immunohistochemical and electrophysiological characterization of voltage-dependent sodium conductances in rats and mormyrid fish. It shows that the sodium channel subunits Nav1.1, Nav1.2, and Nav1.6 are present in Purkinje cells of rats and mormyrid fish, and that both express fast, inactivating sodium currents and resurgent sodium currents. For details, see De Ruiter MM, De Zeeuw CI, and Hansel C. Voltage-gated sodium channels in cerebellar Purkinje cells of mormyrid fish. J Neurophysiol 96: 378-390, 2006. First published April 5, 2006; doi:10.1152/jn.00906.2005.
