Cover: The bobtail skink, Tiliqua rugosa (or Trachydosaurus rugosus), is a large, mostly vegetarian lizard that is widely distributed in Australia's southern regions. The individual in this picture is of the subspecies T. r. konowi, which is restricted to a small island called Rottnest, off Perth on the West Australian coast (photo courtesy of Christine Köppl). The bobtail lizard is a well-studied animal model in auditory physiology. The overlay (a color version of Fig. 1 in Manley et al.) shows that lowering the concentration of calcium in inner-ear fluids shifts the frequencies of otoacoustic emissions, faint sounds that are generated by the sensory cells of the inner ear. From: Manley GA, Sienknecht U, and Köppl C. Calcium modulates the frequency and amplitude of spontaneous otoacoustic emissions in the bobtail skink. J. Neurophysiol (April 21, 2004). doi: 10.1152/jn00267.2004.
