Cover: Activity accelerates the progression of Hereditary Canine Spinal Muscular Atrophy, a dog model of moter neuron disease. During the natural progression of disease at the ages studied, intact axons and intact neuromuscular junctions are observed, but there is a functional defect in neuromuscular transmission that manifests as a failure of motor unit force during repetitive stimulation (top row). Increased motor unit activity provokes the appearance of motor terminal and motor axon degeneration and worsens motor unit failure (bottom row). From: Carrasco DI, Rich MM, Qingbo W, Cope TC, and Pinter MJ. Activity-driven synaptic and axonal degeneration in canine motor neuron disease. J. Neurophysiol 92: 1175–1181, 2004; 10.1152/jn00157.2004.
