Cover: Separation of principal cells and GABAergic interneurons is of utmost importance for the interpretation of neuronal interactions in the cortex. The cover shows high-density recording of neurons in layer 5 of the somatosensory cortex, using 8-shank, 64-site two-dimensional silicon probes. From their short-term synaptic interaction, units could be identified as excitatory or inhibitory. Large-scale recordings of neuronal activity, determination of their physical location in the cortex and their classification into pyramidal and interneuron classes provide the necessary tools for local circuit analysis. From: Bartho P, Hirase H, Monconduit L, Zugaro M, Harris KD, and Buzaki G. Characterization of neocortical principal cells and interneurons by network interactions and extracellular features. J. Neurophysiol 92: 600-608, 2004; 10.1152/jn01170.2003.
