Cover: An adult star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) showing the unusual nose consisting of 22 fleshy appendages surrounding the nostrils. The appendages are not part of an olfactory system but instead are used for tactile explorations. Each appendage is covered with hundreds of touch receptors called Eimer's organs. The central-lower appendages are relatively small but act as the somatosensory fovea and have a greatly enlarged representation in somatosensory cortex. Photo by K. Catania. From: Sachdev RNS and Catania KC. Receptive fields and response properties of neurons in the star-nosed mole's somatosensory fovea. J. Neurophysiol 87: 2602-2611, 2002.
