Cover: Positron emission tomography (PET) image of significant activation in the human right inferior frontal cortex (triangular area) during the assessment of facial emotion. Right-handed normal subjects were asked to assess each facial emotion as positive (happy), neutral (calm), or negative (sad or angry). An activated area (yellow) is superimposed on a sagittal MRI image (bottom). These Noh masks represent four female facial expressions: Koomote, Deigan, Hashihime, and Hannya (top, from left to right). The emotional state of the mask gradually changes from Koomote (happy) to Hannya (extremely angry). These Noh masks were made by Manjiro Maruo and photographed by Machiro Tanaka. From: K. Nakamura, R. Kawashima, K. Ito, M. Sugiura, T. Kato, A. Nakamura, K. Hatano, S. Nagumo, K. Kubota, H. Fukuda, and S. Kojima. Activation of the Right Inferior Frontal Cortex During Assessment of Facial Emotion. J. Neurophysiol. 82: 1610-1614, 1999.
