Cover: Background shows a sliding window cross-correlogram of action-potential activity generated from intracellular recordings of two relay cells in a brain slice preparation of the songbird vocal premotor nucleus RA. Vertical axis: time during recordings; horizontal axis: lag/lead time. Although spontaneous relay cell activity is not correlated at rest (bottom), selective activation of RA interneurons (white cell) can produce highly correlated relay cell firing. Interneurons span large regions of RA, linking discrete regions of the nucleus that are implicated in either respiratory or syringeal motor control. In the behaving animal, it is hypothesized that afferent drive to RA interneurons synchronizes the firing of relay cells, ultimately leading to the coordinated movement of different vocal and respiratory muscles during singing. From J. E. Spiro, M. B. Dalva, and R. Mooney. Long-Range Inhibition Within the Zebra Finch Song Nucleus RA Can Coordinate the Firing of Multiple Projection Neurons. J. Neurophysiol. 81, 1999.
