Changes in optical properties of hippocampal tissue slices during hypoxia. Reflected light images of the CA1 region of rat hippocampal slices were taken before and during oxygen withdrawal. Digital image subtraction provided false color images showing the changes in light reflectance between control and hypoxic tissue. This image of two adjacent slices was taken 12 s after the onset of hypoxic depolarization. Increases in reflectance are seen in stratum radiatum and s. oriens of the CA1 region, with smaller changes in the s. pyramidale. From P. G. Aitken, G. C. Tombaugh, D. A. Turner, and G. G. Somjen. Similar Propagation of Spreading Depression (SD) and Hypoxic SD-like Depolarization in Rat Hippocampus Recorded Optically and Electrically. J. Neurophysiol. 80, 1998.
