Activity in human lateral occipital motion processing areas during three attentional conditions, shown on a surface model of the occipital lobe. When subjects directed their spatial and featural attention towards the speed of points in an annulus, maximal FMRI activity was observed (bottom left). When subjects directed spatial but not featural attention to the annulus, activity was reduced (middle). When subjects directed spatial and featural attention away from the annulus, activity was minimal (top right). The degree of attentional modulation in each condition is illustrated by the relative size of each occipital lobe. From M. S. Beauchamp, R. W. Cox, and E. A. DeYoe. Graded Effects of Spatial and Featural Attention on Human Area MT and Associated Motion Processing Areas. J. Neurophysiol. 78: 516-520, 1997.
