Dil-labeled retinal ganglion (alpha ) cell from an explant coculture of early postnatal kitten retina and a thalamic slice containing the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). In such cocultures, alpha  cells establish functional connections with LGN neurons. This in vitro model is well-suited for morphological, electrophysiological, and pharmacological experiments aimed to define mechanisms underlying the establishment of synaptic connections between retina and visual thalamus. It can also be used to assay the regenerative propensity of different types of retinal ganglion cells during development. From W. Guido, F.-S. Lo, and R. S. Erzurumlu. An In Vitro Model of the Kitten Retinogeniculate Pathway. J. Neurophysiol. 77: 511-516, 1997. (Photograph by R. Erzurumlu).
